Significant Severe Weather Event – August 7th, 2023
A significant severe weather outbreak is possible across the Mid-Atlantic and extending into Pennsylvania throughout the afternoon and evening hours on Monday. Over 120 million people are in a risk area from the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center (SPC) today.
The SPC has issued a rare moderate risk (level 4/5) for parts of far southern PA. This is a very uncommon risk area for the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states. The last moderate risk to be issued in Pennsylvania was back in 2018, with areas in Maryland and Virginia seeing their last moderate risk over a decade ago! Therefore, the severe weather anticipated today should be taken very seriously given the limited precedent. An enhanced risk (level 3/5) extends farther to the north through the Susquehanna Valley and to the west over the Laurel Highlands. Lower odds of severe weather are expected across NW PA, with slight (level 2/5) and marginal (level 1/5) risks in place there.
